Reproductive Health

Reproductive health is concerned with healthy and safe sexual practices. Unhealthy practices can lead to the transmission of diseases from one partner to another and even to the offspring. Reproductive health also depends on healthy behaviour and out look towards sex life. Sexual maturation and body growth are gradual processes. Even with some degree of sexual maturation, the body and mind are not mature enough for a sexual act, childbearing and bringing up children.

Reproduction at an early age, say between 13 and 20 years, is not advisable as the uterus is not completely developed to hold the foetus for the entire gestation period of 9 months. There is a risk that the uterus may rupture or the foetus may be aborted.

Therefore for proper individual health, every human being needs -

(i) To have a balanced diet.

(ii) To observe personal hygiene and cleanliness regularly

(iii) To undertake adequate regular exercise.

To have a balanced diet:

A balanced diet contains the right amount of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals. The diet should contain adequate amount for cereals for carbohydrate, pulses for proteins, controlled amount of butter and ghee for energy and fruits anf vegetables for protection against diseases.

Personal hygiene and regular exercise :

It involves proper cleanliness, regular exercise, proper rest or sleep. With the onset of puberty there occur different changes in the body . During this period sweat glands become more active and hair starts growing in the armpit and pubic region of the body. So , in this case bathing , washing and ironing clothes become very important . Regular exercise and playing outdoor games also help in the proper growth of the body of teenagers.

Say No to Drug:

Adolescents are advised not to feel confused or insecure. You are just passing through a period of much activity in the body and mind, which is a normal part of growing up. So if anybody suggests that you will get relief by taking some drugs just say No to them. Drugs are actually addictive and once taken, there is a tendency to take them again and again. They harm the body in the long run, thereby ruining the health and happiness.

There are different type of diseases that effect the reproductive health of an individual. Some of them are :

The common cause of infertility in females is the inability to produce ova, mainly due to hormonal problems, blocked uterus and cervix, presence of anti - sperm antibodies in female reproductive system, etc. Infertility in male is due to absence of sperm, low sperm count, abnormal sperms, autoimmunity, premature ejaculation and impotence.

2. Menstrual disorders : Hormonal imbalance in the body results in menstrual disorders such as painful, irregular or excessive menstruation.

Sexual intercourse involves intimate physical contact between the male and female sex organs. This contact may transmit certain diseases from one partner to another. Such diseases are called sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
